Leroy was sitting in the front seat, so Joe and I got in the back. Without talking, Chip pulled back out onto the highway and headed south.

After a moment, Chip turned his head slightly and began talking to Joe and me over his right shoulder. “One of my men has spotted a car parked on a field road about 100 yards off the South 17th levee. The snow and ice are still pretty bad and he hasn’t approached the car yet. I told him to meet us on the main road.”

“Did he identify the car?” I asked.

“Not really,” Chip answered hurriedly. “But it’s certainly suspicious, and not a place where a car should be parked. I thought it was a good idea for all of us to check it out together.”

Chip drove slowly through town and then turned on 17th Avenue headed south. The road quickly turned from a residential area into a two-lane highway, which traveled several miles on a high levee through farmland that bordered the middle fork of the Forked Deer River. This was the old Jackson Highway and did eventually arrive in Jackson, although it was mostly used for farm traffic and by people who lived in the surrounding rural communities.

The road was still very icy, and Chip was cautious as we crossed a couple of small bridges and traveled about 3 miles from the Humboldt City Limits. Looking through the windshield, I spotted another Tennessee Highway Patrol cruiser sitting in the middle of the road with its lights flashing.
